During the investigation, authorities reportedly determined that Sexton had kissed the boy and attempted oral sex and sexual intercourse during a visit in December. When the victim left in January, Sexton allegedly expressed a desire to leave her husband to be with him in a text message exchange.

When speaking with investigators, the suspect initially denied that any sexual activity occurred but later allegedly admitted to raping the boy and participating in text message exchanges with him.

Sexton was arrested in St. Augustine, Florida, after law enforcement obtained an arrest warrant on January 27. She was charged with the following:
