As the family prepared for the approaching holiday season, they dared to hope that they might share Christmas together, a final opportunity for cherished memories.
But true to his selfless nature, Bailey requested only gifts that his younger brother, Riley, would enjoy, demonstrating the remarkable generosity and thoughtfulness that had characterized his life, even in the face of unimaginable suffering.
Just before Christmas in 2017, family and friends made one last pilgrimage to Bailey’s hospital room, desperate to be with him in his final days.
When his grandmother tearfully expressed her wish that she could take his place, Bailey responded with wisdom and maturity far beyond his years:
