Shirley MacLaine says she shared intimate moments with two prime ministers.

MacLaine’s career is nothing short of legendary. From her Broadway beginnings in New York to her breakout performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1955 black comedy The Trouble With Harry, she quickly became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses. Over the years, she has appeared in more than 50 films, including iconic roles in The Apartment, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Guarding Tess, and Steel Magnolias, each of which highlighted her remarkable versatility. Her performance as the fiery Ouiser Boudreaux in Steel Magnolias remains a highlight of her career, yet in real life, MacLaine’s personality is far more serene and reflective than the irascible characters she has portrayed.

“Not that much bothers me,” she said in 2019. “I think attitudes are a choice. Anger is a choice, peace is a choice, sarcasm — which is what I’m good at — is a choice.” Despite her many accomplishments, MacLaine places immense value on personal freedom and the simple joys of life. She has described her current existence as “perfect,” relishing the ability to eat and sleep on her own terms while spending much of her time on her New Mexico ranch with her beloved rat terriers.
