Good’s family has also pushed back forcefully against the federal narrative. Her mother, Donna Ganger, described her daughter as compassionate, gentle and deeply devoted to caring for others. She said Good was likely terrified during the encounter.

Friends and former teachers echoed that description, remembering Good as a creative spirit — a poet and writer — who fostered kindness in every space she entered. She had no criminal record beyond a minor traffic violation and was born in Colorado, making her a U.S. citizen.

Just hours before her death, Good had dropped off her youngest child at an elementary school. The family had recently relocated to Minneapolis from Kansas City.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance has made clear the ICE agent involved will not face criminal charges. Speaking to reporters, Vance said the officer has “absolute immunity,” insisting he was carrying out a lawful federal duty. Vance also criticized Minnesota officials who questioned the federal government’s control over the investigation, calling efforts to challenge the agent’s actions “preposterous.”

As flowers and handwritten signs now mark the crash site, the case has become a flashpoint in the broader national battle over immigration enforcement, police accountability and the limits of federal power. With investigations ongoing and public trust shaken, the shooting of Renee Nicole Good is unlikely to fade from the national spotlight anytime soon.
