Debra homeschooled all four children while working sporadically, determined to push Jennette into Hollywood. According to McCurdy, her mother saw stardom as a dream she never fulfilled herself — and placed that ambition squarely on her daughter’s shoulders. When a young Jennette expressed a desire to quit acting, she says her mother reacted with desperation and pressure, insisting the career was “their chance.”

Claims of Control, Abuse, and Long-Term Consequences

McCurdy says both of her parents fought aggressively while she was young, and that her mother often lashed out physically. In her memoir, she describes invasive “exams,” enforced dieting, and monitoring her showers well into her teenage years.
