For Will, these advantages weren’t just practical — they were inspirational. He wanted to prove that beautiful design and sustainability could work together seamlessly.
The Construction: A Monumental Engineering Challenge
The process of constructing a home from 11 shipping containers was anything but simple. In fact, it required months of engineering, planning, and precision.
The containers had to be cut, reinforced, insulated, and strategically positioned to form a cohesive living layout.
Arranging the Containers
Rather than stacking them in a simple rectangular block, Will collaborated with an architect to create a layout with depth, flow, and personality.
The containers were arranged in a combination of horizontal and vertical placements, creating:
A multi-level living area with dramatic ceiling height
Spacious hallways connecting various container modules
A rooftop terrace built from two reinforced containers
Cantilevered sections creating natural overhangs for shade
This design not only maximized space but also gave the home its strikingly modern appearance.
Cutting and Reinforcing
Every container had to be carefully modified. Doorways, windows, and entire walls were cut open to merge the containers into seamless rooms. To support these changes, steel beams were added along vulnerable points.
Installing Massive Floor-to-Ceiling Windows
To move away from the “boxy” container feel, Will installed large custom-built windows. Some sections of the home now feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls, giving the house:
