And Victoria thought she knew just the way to do it.

An Offer Ethan Couldn’t Ignore

The next day, Victoria returned to the same street corner. She wore sunglasses and a designer coat, an odd sight among the cardboard signs and sleeping bags.

Ethan saw her approach and stood warily.

“Do you remember me?” she asked coldly. “I was with the girl who gave you that sandwich.”

Ethan nodded, unsure what she wanted.

“I have a proposal for you,” she continued. “Marry my stepdaughter, and I’ll make sure you never go hungry again.”

Ethan laughed — at first. “You want me to what?”

Victoria laid out the plan. An arranged marriage, a life of comfort, food, shelter — all in exchange for one thing: playing his part.

“You’d be helping the very people you sit with every day,” she said. “Think of what you could do for them.”

Ethan hesitated. Something about it didn’t feel right. But Victoria’s words echoed in his head.

Maybe this could be his chance — not just to survive, but to give others a chance too.
