The creators of Brilliant Minds had written an emotional holiday episode exploring ALS — and invited Eric Dane to portray a character living with the disease.
The role resonated deeply.
Dane played a firefighter and 9/11 hero who, after years of service, must confront the reality of an ALS diagnosis. One scene required him to record a message about seeking help, accepting vulnerability, and facing the unknown with courage.
The moment was powerful on screen — but even more extraordinary off screen.

Show creator Michael Grassi spoke with USA Today about the moment Dane completed one of the most emotional scenes:
According to Grassi, dozens of cast and crew members rose to their feet, many with tears in their eyes, applauding Dane’s bravery, honesty, and heart.
“It was beautiful, and it was real,” he said.
