“Ten Minutes of Applause”: A Moment No One Will Forget
“He essentially got a 10-minute standing ovation. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
According to Grassi, dozens of cast and crew members rose to their feet, many with tears in their eyes, applauding Dane’s bravery, honesty, and heart.
“It was beautiful, and it was real,” he said.
“His character was showing bravery, but Eric was showing real-life bravery too. It takes enormous courage to share this part of yourself with the world.”

Grassi emphasized that Dane’s participation brought authenticity to the episode — a reflection of the realities thousands of ALS patients and families face every year.
Collaboration Built on Trust and Respect
The storyline became a collaborative effort. Grassi explained that Dane’s team approached the show in September, expressing interest in participating despite his health challenges.
“We kept the conversation open and adjusted everything to make sure he felt comfortable and supported.”
The result was an episode deeply grounded in truth. The script avoided dramatic exaggeration or unrealistic portrayals.
Instead, it focused on the emotional reality of receiving a life-altering diagnosis: the confusion, the fear, the grief, and the immense love and strength families show behind closed doors.
“There’s no rule book,” Grassi explained.
“There’s no right or wrong way to navigate a difficult diagnosis. We wanted to show that honestly.”
