“It was like an explosion. There was a loud bang, then we saw flames. People ran out of their cars, some screaming,” said Ana Torres, a driver who witnessed the scene from the opposite lane.
Scenes of Despair and Rapid Response
Videos filmed by witnesses show thick plumes of black smoke rising above the highway, as several passersby tried to rescue vehicle occupants before the fire spread. Some managed to pull a man trapped inside seconds before the car was completely engulfed in flames.
Miami-Dade County firefighters arrived quickly on the scene and brought the blaze under control in less than 20 minutes. At least four people were injured, two of them seriously, and were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
