This tragedy adds to a long-standing concern about BR-251, which is widely recognized as one of the most hazardous highways in Minas Gerais and even throughout eastern Brazil. Several factors contribute to this reputation:

Extremely heavy traffic, especially of trucks transporting goods between the Northeast and southern Brazil.
