Many people experience judgment when it comes to the decision to have children. Society tends to present a very narrow timeline for adulthood:
Grow up. Get married. Build a career. Have kids — and do it “at the right time.” Anyone who steps outside that pattern often becomes the target of questions, assumptions, or criticism.
And individuals with disabilities — particularly those with intellectual or developmental differences — face even harsher scrutiny.
People underestimate them. People assume they cannot be independent.
People assume they cannot be good partners. And far too often, people assume they cannot be good parents.
