“You shouldn’t be picking things from the trash, son.”
“But Mom, it’s clean. Look – it looks brand new,” Marcos insisted.
“Mom!” he exclaimed. “Look at this!”
Anna rushed over and gasped when she saw the money—thirty thousand euros in total. For a moment, silence hung between them, the temptation nearly overwhelming. They could pay off debts, escape poverty, start fresh. But Anna pressed her lips together.
“This isn’t ours,” she said firmly. “We’ll return it tomorrow.”
The following day, they went to the elegant building where Marcos had spotted the man. The doorman, wary, called the apartment owner. When he appeared, their eyes met, and Anna froze.
“Anna?” he whispered, stunned. “Is that really you?”
She, too, was speechless. More than ten years had passed, but she recognized that voice instantly. It was Daniel, her former great love and the father Marcos had never met.
